When I joined AAB People, I was extremely excited to join an environment where there is an emphasis on learning and development. As I recently graduated in 2019, I was eager to continue my learning journey and develop into a well-rounded HR professional.

The team at AAB People have a wealth of experience within the HR field meaning that there is so much knowledge that I can absorb! As each of our consultants have their own specialist knowledge areas and experience, it is very easy for me to draw upon help where needed and learn about a range of different HR disciplines in practice.

I can already see that being in a consultancy environment so early on in my career is beneficial due to the level of exposure to different areas of HR that I have received. For example, I am currently shadowing some Values Workshops with Donna Wrigglesworth, Senior HR Consultant, which has been beneficial by allowing me to observe how the sessions are facilitated. Another recent example was a knowledge share meeting with Scott Baxter, Senior HR Consultant, where he shared his knowledge and experience of chairing mediation sessions.

To further develop my skills to add value to our purpose driven clients, AAB People are kindly funding and supporting me through my Level 7 CIPD Qualification.

Studying for my CIPD qualification

I am studying my CIPD course part-time alongside work which will take around 24 months to complete. AAB People has been extremely supportive and gives me time during the week to dedicate to my studying, as well as allowing time for workshop attendance and tutor meetings. I have picked to go for an online workshop teaching format which has given me a chance to network with other HR professionals throughout the UK and support each other through assignments.

I have just completed my first module which was Strategic Employment Relations, some modules I will be undertaking on the course includes Resourcing and Talent Management, Strategic Reward Management, People Management and Development Strategies, Working Lives in Changing Environments as well as a research project and an ongoing continuing professional development project. There are a range of optional units, as well a whole other branch of the course covering specifically Learning & Development.

The courses are designed to allow you to learn about not only the key areas of HR, but specialist areas which are of interest to you, which really compliments the varying exposure to specialist areas that I have at AAB People. Another thing I have enjoyed about studying so far is being able to recognize the theory behind everyday situations. Also, as a CIPD student member, I have been given access to a range of resources, so I have been enjoying keep up to date with hot topics within the field and areas relevant to my role at AAB People.

I have felt so supported through my course so far, not only by my study center tutor but also my team! Its great to work somewhere that cares about the full potential you can bring, and who look at the bigger picture when it comes to your career.

If you are considering studying for a professional qualification, my advice would be to go for it! Learning about topics you love, while bettering your own career and the service you can provide to clients is truly invaluable.
